Last Saturday I went to a local America’s Best to make use of their two pairs of glasses and an eye exam for the low, low price of $69.95. I didn’t strictly need new glasses in terms of still being able to see quite well with my old pair, but I wanted to get better-looking glasses, and I hadn’t been to the eye doctor since 2006.

So, yeah. Here’s me in my old glasses. Blah, boring, whatever. The gold/brown ones are, I think, my favorite, but they feel ever-so-slightly too tight (with ever-so-slightly too long earpieces). The silvery ones are kind of a perfect fit, which is nice.

It’s gonna fun having a glasses wardrobe. (And with a new prescription, maybe I can find some inexpensive online glasses place for prescription sunglasses; my current method is to wear a pair of big, ugly sunglasses overtop my actual glasses. Not a good look.)

It’s pretty difficult not to end up doing this. I have the same problem with the reprise of Standing/Under Your Spell, although mainly I just seem to end up going with Giles’ part as my voice is annoyingly low.

At the OMWF screening in DC, I made it a point to try and sing the parts that felt less likely to be sung along with. It was a lot of guesswork on my part, based mostly on what I hear as the main bit or the easier-to-hear bits (for instance, I think I ended up doing Tara in the “Standing/Under Your Spell” reprise because Giles’ part has more movement in it and I assumed people would go with that), and no one but the lady in front of me could hear me, but it felt like a fun challenge to me.

Photoshop adjustment layers!

Okay, so I’m still rockin’ it with Photoshop CS2, so there may be a bit of visual differences, but the principles still hold up. Adjustment layers are one of my favorite things for giffing. They allow you to apply the same adjustments — color, levels, curves, hue and saturation, gradients, etc. — to all the visible layers. They’re editable (so you can make changes if you need to), they’re layerable (you can apply multiple ones of the same type), and they’re layers that have all those layer properties (like blending options or opacity changes or even layer masks). Basically, they’re pretty great.

(Did you know that there were adjustment layers as far back as Photoshop 4? I didn’t, and I started using Photoshop 4 in 1997!)

So how do you get this magical adjustment layer? You can either go to the Layer Menu and select your choice from the New Adjustment Layer menu, or you can choose it from the Layers palette. The icon is a circle that’s half black and half white; I’ve highlighted it below:

When you click it, you’ll see all these options:

For giffing purposes, put your adjustment layer(s) as the uppermost layers in your layer palette. Then, in the first frame (assuming you have it set to propagate Frame 1), if you make the adjustment layer(s) visible, it will be seen on every frame, therefore it’s applied to every frame, and you only have to do it once.

Also, as the adjustment is now a layer, you can change the layer blending option —

or the opacity.

You can drag it to another image altogether, like you can with any layer, which means making several gifs from the same scene rather a bit easier.

What’s even better is you can edit the adjustment after it’s been made. So if you’ve decided that you want a bit more contrast or that you need to adjust it to make certain frames balance a bit better, you can.

So that’s the adjustment layer in a very brief nutshell. As it is, I’m sure there’s even more cool stuff you can do with it that I don’t, but it’s a start.

I went to the store today and got what I need for my new knitting project… well, except for one thing, but that’s definitely a final touch that I may not actually need, so I’m not counting it. This means I can properly start working on this, and I’m excited.

And if it turns out even half as cool as I hope, you guys are gonna love it. Like, not even kidding, you’re gonna want one yourself.
